Marie arrived in Dunedin, New Zealand on the "Caroline" on 25/5/1883. She originally left Glasgow on the Wild Deer" but it ran aground off the coast of Ireland and sank and most of the passengers on the "Wild Deer" came out on the "Caroline". It is unsure why she came out to New Zealand by herself or even got from Switzerland to Glasgow family tradition has it that she came out as a companion and that she ran away because her parents wanted her to enter a Nunnery. Apparently she went back for a visit not long before her death but was very disappointed as no-one wanted to know her.
