As mentioned on the Wallace page Mary Plunkett married William McDowell in 1862. In 1891, some years after Mary’s death in 1882, McDowell entered into some correspondence with the local M P John Ballance (later premier of New Zealand) about the possibility of an outstanding land grant being owed to the late Richard Wallace who had died at Te Ngutu O Te Manu in 1868. At that time McDowell was living eleven miles up the river from Wanganui. As Richard was a member of the Wellington Rangers it appears that he was not entitled to a land grant, but there was the sum of ten pounds thirteen shillings in back pay which had not been paid out, and a letter from Mr Ballance to Premier Richard John Seddon recommends that this sum be paid to McDowell. The three brothers, William at Patea, John Henry at Barry’s Bay, Akaroa and Archy at Manaia were all agreeable to this arrangement. According to the correspondence, there was no promise of land made for service in the Wellington Rangers. There were no “Military Settler’s Regulations” then in force.
