Whangarei Harbour from Parua Bay by James Scott's grave
Robert and Elizabeth and family farmed at Parua Bay, Whangarei Harbour. They bought 80 acres of land from David Hay in 1854 and it is said that Robert dug the land by hand. They grew oats, wheat, and maize to produce their own flour. Their first home had been a raupo thatched hut but this was destroyed by fire and replaced in 1885 by a pit sawn timber (from Pataua) house. Not long after Robert Scott died 10/10/1886 and is buried at Parua Bay Cemetery
His death certificate states

Issue M 28, 27, 24, 14 F 32, 30, 20, 19, 18, 16. Informant George Scott, son, Parua Bay
The property was left to George Runciman Scott and Robert. The property being to small to sustain two George bought out Robert's share but prices of goods were poor and George also had to go away as a carpenter to Limestone Island for work. Between 1905-10 the dairy factory opened at Parua Bay and this meant George could stay home and make a living off the farm.
Jane married James Hamilton from Auckland on 26/12/1853. He arrived on 19/10/1851 with his wife Jessie Robertson and a children Gilbert (aged 2) and Jessie Glasgow Hamilton (aged 7 months) but Jessy died in Auckland 8/1/1852 of fever aged 30 years. James Hamilton seems to have been an important member of the family as he was listed as the informant to most of the Scott births. James Hamilton was a partner of Hamilton and Nash Bakery store in Thames which Will in 1880 took over and later expanded to include groceries, crockery and iron-monger .Will, Jessie and Isabella left home when young, Will was only 13 and went to Thames to work at their Uncle's Bakery. Will's job was to take bread out to the miners.
Going back to William Scott, the father, who came out with his two adult children. We find back in Kingsbarns, Fife Parish records, 15/12 1818 Robert Scott son of William Scott weaver Milton of Pitmilly and Elspeth Young his spouse baptised 20th. The only other child we can find is Jane on 17/9/1820 at Kingsbarns.
The 1851 census of Kingsbarns shows the following:- William Scott, Head widower 68 weaver, Kingsbarns
Jean Scott daughter single 29 dressmaker Kingsbarns.
There was no sign of Robert. Possibly he was a ship's carpenter, as he describes himself later and away at sea at the time.
William and Elspeth Young were married 16/12/1814 and the banns were read at both Kingsbarns and St Andrews.
Elspeth Young was born 17 March 1779 at Leuchars daughter of Thomas Young and Christian Henderson. She died 13 Dec 1824 at Kingsbarns. There is a possiblity that she was married previously to John Simpson( married 31 October 1795 Leuchars). This marriage produced 9 children from 1796-1810.
The following all were born and married at Leuchars
Thomas Young married 26 July 1760 Christian Henderson

William Scott was the son of Robert Scott and Isabel Lesslie married 24 November 1775, both of Kingsbarns. Robert was also a weaver from Pitmilly. They had the following children: James 20/11/1776 bapt 24/11, Archibald 30/8/1778 bapt 13/9, Mary 19/8/1781, William 22//2/3 /1783/1784 bapt 28/2/3/1783/84, Robert 10/7/1786 bapt 13/7, Jean 13 /1/1789 bapt 18 Jan and David 21 /5/1791 bapt 5/6. Isabel Lesslie died 13 Feb buried 26 1835
Remains of Pitmilly House Kingsbarns Fife
There is a birth of Robert on 28 August 1737. Son of James Scott and Mary Clerk (married 16 Feb 1722). It is hard to work out if the James who married Mary Clerk in 1722 and the James that married Mary Sim are the same person and which children belong to which marriage .Other children born to James Scott were Elspet 1723, Elizabeth 1725. Mary Clerk was married to George Airth and had 2 children Isoball (1714) and Mary ( 1717) to him . She was the daughter, born 13 October 1691 of Alexander Clerk and Elspet Kinzie who were married at Kingsbarns 27 October 1698 and According to parish records and that of Ceres Associate Congregation records James Scott and Margaret Sim were living at Pitmilly. They were married 17 December 1726 both of the parish. In the entries for each of the following births James is described as a weaver at East Milns of Pitmillie: Isaball1727, Alexander 1728, David 1729, William, 1731 Elizabeth, 1732, Jean 1733, Marion 1734, James 1736 , Robert 1737,and John 1738 and then there is a gap where they could have gone to another church, and finally had their daughter Margaret baptized 1741 at Ceres but still living Pitmilly.
In early research it had Isabel Lesslie when she married had from Dun. This lead us on a wild goose chase as when we researched the parish records it had both from kingsbarns but there is a small parish right beside Kingsbarns called Dunino. In that parish there is the following Isabell CARSTAIRS married James LESLES in
Dunino/Kingsbarns 21/22 Feb 1723 and had 8 children in Dunino.
