JEWEL AND IAN FAMILY HISTORY
POWELL FAMILY
Robert Scroggie married Jane Powell at Kirkoswald on 14 December 1832.
Jane Powell was born in the parish of Girvan, which is about 28 miles south of Ayr. Her parents were Thomas Powell and Catherine Stewart, who were married at Dailly, Ayrshire on 25 April, 1795. Entry in the Girvan parish register records that "Jean Powell, lawful daughter to Thomas Powell in Grangetown and Cathrine Stewart was born 7th and baptised 9th July 1807.” At least six other children were born to this couple between 1796 and 1817 as follows:
William bapt 9/2/1796
Janet 28/8/1797
Catherine bapt. 2/2/1799
Jean born 4/6/1801 bapt. 5/6/1801
Thomas born 18/9/1803 bapt 19/9/1803
James born 10/5/1817 bapt 11/5/1817 at Colmonell
In the 1841 census of Maybole there is the following information:

Scroggie Jean F 6 Ayrshire

Cathrine’s maiden name was Stewart.
Thomas Powell is almost certainly the Thomas Pow who was baptised 21/9/1774 in the parish of Girvan, the son of Thomas Pow and Jean Lamb. The usual custom in Scotland was for the second daughter to be named after the paternal grandmother, which strengthens the case for this being the same family.
Thomas Pow married Jean Lamb. Their children were:
- John born 13 October and baptised 14 October 1768 at Colmonell
- James born /9/1771 at Letterpen, Girvan
- Thomas “ 21/9/1774 at Muckle Letterpine, Girvan
- Elizabeth ‘ 24/12/1777 at Dinvine, Girvan
High Letterpin farm
The two farms mentioned in the above information are in close proximity to one another, southeast of Girvan on the Newton Stewart road in the valley of the River Stinchar. On the Ordnance Survey map they appear as Dinvin and High Letterpin.
The name is spelled variously as Pow, Powel, and Powell in this parish between 1770 and 1810.Earlier it appears as Pau, Poe, Pooe, Pou and even Poo. Likely source of the name is the Pow Burn near Tarbolton. There is also a Pow Burn in Northumberland, which could explain why there appear to be two distinct Pow families, one in Ayrshire and one in the Berwick/East Lothian area. G.F. Black is not specific on origin of the name.
According to the Girvan parish records, the following is the previous generation of the family. As the records for the parish do not commence until 1733, there may possibly be more children. Also the marriage records for this period do not exist, so there is little chance of finding the name of John Pow’s wife.
